CARDBOARD FOOD PACKAGING. SMALL FOOD PACKING BOXES SHOULD BE SHREDDED OR PRE-SOAKED IN RAIN WATER, JUST LEAVE THEM OUTSIDE IN A BUCKET FOR A FEW DAYS. GOOD SOURCE OR CARBON. BEWARE OF BI-MATERIAL LAYERS SUCH AS PLASTIC AND  FOIL.    x x x

378:1
CARDBOARD BOXES. CAN BE COMPOSTED BUT NEED PREPARING AS PER FOOD PACKING. LARGE AMOUNTS SHOULD BE FEED INTO THE WELL ESTABLISHED RECYCLING SYSTEM.     x x

378:1

DRY LOOSE LEAVES. IN SMALL AMOUNTS, LEAVE TO FALL AND DRY OUT, CRUSH AND ADD MIXED WELL WITH GREEN  WASTE. GOOD CARBON SOURCE, CAN BE TOUGH TO BRAKE DOWN. LARGE AMOUNTS ARE BEST MULCHED.     x x 47:1
SOIL. 3-4 HANDFULS OF SOIL Will INOCULATE YOUR COMPOST PILE BY INTRODUCING BILLIONS OF MICRO-ORGANISMS. MOST ADDED WASTE WILL CONTAIN ITS OWN BACTERIA, BUT THEIRS NOTHING WRONG WITH GIVEN NATURE A HELPING HAND. STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.     x x x  10;1

WOOD. ENSURE THAT ONLY WELL AGED SOFTWOOD LIKE OLD PINE ENTERS THE COMPOST PILE AND IT MUST BE COMPLETELY CHIPPED. AN EXTREMELY RICH CARBON SOURCE, MIX WELL WITH HIGH NITROGEN MATERIALS AND KEEP MOIST. AVOID NEW TREATED WOODS THEY CONTAIN SOME VERY NASTY COMPOUNDS. SHOULD BE USED AS A BULKING AGENT TO ENABLE VENTILATION THROUGH THE PILE AND THEN REMOVED BY SIEVING.    x x 250:1
EGG BOX. THE PERFECT LOW GRADE CARDBOARD FOR COMPOSTING, NOTICE THE GRAINY AND FIBROUS TEXTURE. IT WILL QUICKLY REDUCE BACK TO FLOCKS (paper fibre) AFTER BEING SOAKED FOR ONLY A SHORT TIME.      x x x  378:1

EGG SHELLS. EGG SHELLS NEED TO BE CRUSHED WELL AND ARE OFTEN FOUND IN THE FINISHED COMPOST, THEY ARE AN IMPORTANT SOURCE OF POTASSIUM BUT DO NOT EFFECT THE C:N RATIO.   x x x 1:1
NEWSPAPER. A GOOD SOURCE OF CARBONS, USE SPARINGLY TO AVOID CLUMPING IN MULTI-LAYERS. SMALL AMOUNTS NEED SHREDDING OR PRE-SOAKING IN RAINWATER, AS FOR OTHER CARBONS MIX WELL WITH GREENS.     x x x  323:1
GRASS CUTTINGS. A VERY GOOD SOURCE OF NITROGEN, USE SPARINGLY TO AVOID MATTED CLUMPS. SMALL AMOUNTS NEED TO BE MIXED WELL WITH SHREDDED PAPER / CARDBOARD OR OTHER CARBON RICH MATERIALS. IF YOU HAVE NO LAWN ACQUIRE  GRASS CUTTINGS FROM OTHERS, THEY WILL BE MORE THAN WILLING TO HELP.      x x 15;1
WASTEPAPER. LOW AND OFFICE GRADE PAPER CAN BE USED, SHRED AND PRE-SOAK, REMOVING PLASTIC ADDRESS WINDOWS AND STICKY STRIPS FROM ENVELOPES. AVOID GLOSSY PRINT LADEN MAGAZINES.       x x 129;1
COTTON CLOTH. OLD COTTON CLOTHES AND RAGS, MUST BE 100% COTTON OR OTHER NATURAL FIBRES. CUT UP AND SHRED TO AVOID  FORMING CLUMP, DAMPEN BEFORE ADDING TO PILE. RAGS MUST BE DEVOID OF ALL CLEANING CHEMICALS, USE SPARINGLY.      x 30:1
STRAW, PET BEDDING. EXTREMELY RICH CARBON SOURCE AND RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE, MIX WELL WITH NITROGEN RICH MATERIALS SUCH AS GRASS CUTTINGS, KEEP MOIST AND USE SPARINGLY. MAY NEED SHREDDING TO AVOID FORMING MATTED CLUMPS.    x x 350:1
FRUIT SCRAPS. A MAIN WORMERY INGREDIENT, ENSURE THE FRUIT SCRAPS ARE CHOPPED UP WELL AND COLD BEFORE ADDING. MIX WELL INTO A COMPOST PILE TAKING TIME TO BURY AND COVER.    x x x  21:1
COFFEE GROUNDS. ARE ESPECIAL SUITED TO A  WORMERY. ENSURE THEY ARE DEPOSITED COLD. THE GRITTY CONSISTENCY HELPS THE WORMS TO GRIND DOWN SOFTER ORGANIC FOOD WASTE IN THERE INTESTINES. A VERY HIGH SOURCE OF NITROGEN.     x x x  18:1

GARDEN TRIMMINGS. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO SHRED THE WOODY STEMS INTO SMALL CHIPPINGS, TO ENABLE THE WOODY FIBRES TO BE BROKEN DOWN. WILL PRODUCE A GOOD MIX IF BROWNS AND GREENS ARE SHREDDED TOGETHER.     x x 35:1
TEA AND TEA BAGS. ARE ESPECIAL SUITED TO A  WORMERY. ENSURE THEY ARE DEPOSITED COLD. THE GRITTY CONSISTENCY HELPS THE WORMS TO GRIND DOWN SOFTER ORGANIC FOOD WASTE IN THERE INTESTINES. A VERY HIGH SOURCE OF NITROGEN.      x x x  15:1
ONION SKINS. HIGH IN NITROGEN, BEST COMPOSTED IN WORM BIN, DO NOT COMPOST LARGE QUANTITY, AS MICRO-ORGANISMS CAN ONLY STAND SO MUCH OF IT.       x x 15.1
SHRUB & HEDGE TRIMMINGS. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO SHRED THESE INTO SMALL CHIPPINGS TO ENABLE THE WOODY FIBRES TO BE BROKEN DOWN, MIX WELL WITH GREENS.     x x 60:1
FOOD SCRAPES. A MAIN COMPOST INGREDIENT AVOID AT ALL COST FATS, MEAT, FISH, BONE AND DIARY PRODUCTS. ENSURE FOOD IS COLD AND CHOPPED UP WELL BEFORE ADDING TO YOUR PILE, MIX WELL INTO EXISTING COMPOST.     x x x  32:1
VEGETABLE SCRAPES . ANOTHER FUNDAMENTAL INGREDIENT OF THE COMPOST PILE. TRY AND CHOP UP THE VEGETABLE WASTE AS SMALL AS POSSIBLE DURING FOOD PREPARATION, USE MIXED WITH HIGH CARBON MATERIALS.    x x x 11:1
GREEN LEAVES. IF ITS NOT PRACTICAL TO LET THE FRESH LEAVES DRY OUT, SHRED FRESH LEAVES AND MIX WELL WITH HIGH CARBON WASTES LIKE SAWDUST, CHIPPED WOOD OR SOAKED PAPER. LARGE AMOUNTS ARE BEST MULCHED.      x x 37:1
STALE BREAD.  TENDS TO GO OFF VERY QUICKLY, SO FED TO WORMERY IN SMALL AMOUNTS BROKEN UP FOR EASY CONSUMPTION, LARGE AMOUNTS SHOULD BE BROKEN DOWN AND COMPOSTED WITH GRASS.     x x x
SAWDUST, PET BEDDING. EXTREMELY RICH IN CARBON, N=MIX WELL WITH HIGH NITROGEN MATERIALS SUCH AS GRASS CUTTINGS , KEEP MOIST AND USE SPARINGLY.      x x

600:1

WEEDS. MOST WEEDS ARE FINE, AVOID SEED HEADS AND WEEDS WITH PERSISTENT ROOT SYSTEMS, USE JUST THE LEAVES AND STEMS..     x x

WATER. A MOST VITAL INGREDIENT, YOU SHOULD AIM FOR THE PILE TO REMAIN A CONSTANT  60% WATER, BEARING IN MIND MOST GREENS ADDED ARE 80% WATER. THE COMPOST SHOULD FEEL LIKE A DAMP SPONGE WHEN SQUEEZED WITHOUT DRIPPING FREE WATER. MOISTURE CAN BE ADDED BY PRE-SOAKING CARBON RICH MATERIALS LIKE PAPER, SAWDUST AND CARDBOARD BEFORE ADDING TO THE PILE. AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AVOID INTRODUCING CHLORINATED DOMESTIC TAP WATER WHICH CAN AFFECT YOUR MICRO-ORGANISMS, TRY BEING NATURAL WITH THE USE OF COLLECTED RAINWATER.     x x x
